Micro-Needling

What is Micro-Needling?

Micro-Needling is a skin rejuvenation treatment that involves creating numerous tiny punctures in the skin using tiny needles.

The concept was introduced in the 1950's, but it is gaining popularity in the past few years with the rapid growth of the anti-aging industry.

What skin conditions are treated?

The depth of micro-needling can be varied from 0.25mm to 2.0mm depending on the condition being treated.

The most popular use of micro-needling is as an anti-aging treatment. It reduces lines and tightens skin.* Depth of needling is 1 to 2mm.

Acne scarring and stretch marks are also popular targets. Some traumatic scars can be treated. Depth is 1 to 2mm.

Micro-needling can be used to treat difficult pigmentation. Depth is 0.25 to 0.5mm.

It can also be used as a maintenance technique or to simply freshen up generally healthy skin. Depth is 0.25 to 0.5mm.

*Results may vary.

How does Micro-Needling work?

Thousands of tiny holes are made in the skin. These tiny injuries trigger the healing mechanism. This includes the activation of fibroblasts which lay down new collagen.

The effect can be amplified by the application of various substances to the skin that are driven in during the needling process.

What kinds of substances are used to amplify the effect?

There are many products that can be applied to the skin before and immediately after the treatment to enhance the effect. The product chosen depends on the skin condition being treated.

We have various products that contain hyaluronic acid, anti-oxidants, peptides, azelaic acid, kojic acid, retinols, and more.

What areas can be treated?

Any skin can be treated, but the most common areas treated are face, neck, decollete, and hands.

Stretch marks on the abdomen and breasts are commonly treated.

Does Micro-Needling hurt?

There is no simple answer to this question, because pain response and tolerance is different from person to person. The degree of discomfort also varies from area to area and the depth of treatment.

We apply topical anesthetic creams about 30 minutes before treatment. Even with this, treatments feel scratchy. Most patients experience minimal discomfort.

Afterward, there might be some mild stinging.

How long do treatments take?

The procedure itself take about half an hour. Add another 30 minutes for the topical anesthetic.

Large areas like the abdomen or combined areas like face/neck take longer.

What is the downtime?

This depends on the depth of treatment (see "What skin conditions are treated?" above). Shallow treatments recover in 24 hours or less. Most people undergoing deep treatments experience 2 to 4 days of downtime. Bruising can last a week.

What do I need to do to prepare for treatment?

Stop taking anything that can contribute to bruising one week before treatment. This includes anti-inflammatories (ibuprofen, ASA, naproxen, etc), vitamin E, omega 3s, green tea, and red wine.

Remove all make-up, and wash your face with soapy water.

How many treatments are required?

This depends primarily on the severity of the problem and your goals. Generally 3 sessions are needed spaced at 1 month intervals. For more severe problems a second round of 3 sessions is recommended 3 to 6 months following the first round.

Maintenance is required for anti-aging effects. One session every year or so is probably enough, but this varies depending on age, smoking, sun exposure, and other factors.

When are the results seen, and how long do the effects last?

We are waiting for a biologic response to treatment, primarily new collagen production. This peaks at 3 to 6 months. Positive effects can be seen as early as one month and get better and better.*

Once new collagen has been produced, it is very durable (4 or 5 years).* Since aging is an ongoing process, maintenance is required. You will probably chose to do one booster session every year or so.

*Results may vary.

What are the side effects of Micro-Needling?

There are very few side effects.

Bruising can occur.

Mild swelling and redness will probably occur. It usually resolves in a day or two.

Infection is possible, but extremely uncommon.

What are the alternatives to Micro-Needling?

There are several treatment options that can improve your skin, depending on the nature of the problem, including peels of varying strengths, Pixel laser skin resurfacing, and surgical facelifts. You should also stop smoking, start using cosmeceuticals regularly, and wear sunscreen!

What is your cancellation policy?

We require 48 hours notice for cancellation of your consultation or treatment, in order to fill the appointment time. If sufficient notice is not given, the full value of the treatment to be done may be charged with the minimum amount being $100.
