The following substances have well established reputations and scientific evidence of efficacy:
Vitamin C: antioxidant, exfoliant, collagen stimulator. Our favorite vitamin C is from Vivier Pharma. THeir vitamin C serum is our best seller.
Vivier holds the patent on what we believe to be the world's best topical vitamin C. The problem with vitamin C is that it is unstable. It has a very short shelf-life. Vivier has developed a stable form of vitamin C.
Vitamin C is a very powerful antioxidant. It provides immediate neutralization of free radials produced by ionizing radiation from sunlight and exposure to environmental toxins such as cigarette smoke. It also stimulates new collagen formation.
Vivier has also developed a unique delivery system called IDS (IntraDermal System). This system provides superior penetration of active ingredients into the skin, and it provides sustained release of these ingredients.
Vitamin A derivatives (retinoids): antioxidant, exfoliant, collagen stimulator. Present in many over-the-counter preparations, often in quantities that are too low to have much benefit. Products that are strong enough to be beneficial are available only by prescription.
Oligopeptides: collagen stimulators
Argirilene: a topical muscle relaxant that is an offshoot of research into synthetic Botox. It can reduce the depth of lines by up to 30% with continuous use.
Ceramides: copies of your body's natural oils for the best in moisturizing
Growth factors: substances your body requires for the normal growth of skin
Hydroquinone and kojic acid: these inhibit the formation of pigment and result in "bleaching" of age spots and sun damage.
Alpha- and beta-hydroxy acids (AHAs)(eg. glycolic acid): for daily exfoliation and control of pigment and acne.
Fillagrin anti-oxidants: for daily exfoliation and control of pigment and acne, but with potent anti-oxidant properties (that AHAs lack).
